African commodities have typically sold on international price benchmarks in London, Geneva and Singapore. Local producers haven't always received the fairest price, whilst trading and marketing profits are often offshored. It is past time for trusted and transparent local price indices, ensuring fairness, neutrality and cost-competitiveness for all. Our certified network of members (producers, traders and consumers) offers the most trusted and efficient way to access the African commodity sector. Register an account and apply for corporate membership today.

We are a neutral industry body, committed to enabling efficient African commodity markets.

We host transparent, trusted and tradeable markets, based on decades of industry experience and an understanding that not all commodities can be standardised and traded 24/7. We therefore offer a standardised OTC marketplace, as well as customised tenders and auctions for buyers and sellers alike. Working with industry players, we develop standard contract terms, quality specifications and delivery points, helping to drive efficiencies in trade-flows and logistics.

Our other services include regular market research, price indices and analysis, as well as hosting expert masterclasses and industry events through the year. For all members, we offer a trusted "who's who" network and introductory service for verified domestic producers, traders and consumers, where we employ a strict KYC and onboarding process. We also offer finance origination services for verified projects. Ultimately we are here to serve the African commodities industry wherever we can.

Annual fees for our different corporate membership accounts are detailed below. Currently, local South African corporates can take advantage of significantly discounted fees on the USD rate. We can hold these ZAR rates until 1 June 2020.

Oyama Balfour
Executive Director: Business Development

Mr. Balfour is Founder and CEO of Penrose Capital, a core investor into African Source Markets.

He first began his career working as a Junior Hedge Fund Manager for the Sanlam Multi-Strategy Hedge Fund. The fund used a combination of fixed income and long-short equity strategies to generate investment returns. Mr. Balfour ran a family and friends cryptocurrency fund, investing in Altcoins, ICO’s and bitcoin, achieving a peak holding period return of 84% whilst managing to protect investor capital. Mr. Balfour then worked as a Junior Analyst at Kwande Capital, a young, dynamic and fast-growing group with a primary focus in the energy sector. This opportunity allowed him to polish his valuation and capital raising skills for Black Economic Empowerment vehicles.

Born in Mthatha, Balfour matriculated with six distinctions from Hilton College and went on to study a Bachelor of Commerce in Economics and Statistics at UCT. He further pursued Honours in Mathematical Finance through the University of Stellenbosch and the African Institute of Mathematical and Statistical Science. He was awarded the National Research Fund for scarce skills scholarship because of the scientific merit of his thesis topic to positively impact South African society.

African Source Markets is committed to a sustainable future for African commodities. We are also fully supportive of a "Just Transition" in the coal and other energy intensive sectors. Here is how we play our part :-

  • Commodity market price transparency enables optimum comparisons for clean energy solutions
  • Efficient markets, committed to full disclosure and ethical dealing, help eliminate corruption and the raping of resources
  • A significant part of our credit-rating for market members includes a commitment to ESG sustainability - no "greenwashing" is permitted
  • We can originate innovative mine-closure and rehab opportunities for market members e.g. converting strip mines to organic agri, property developments etc.
  • Our integrated marketplace provides opportunities for traders to migrate to other cleaner commodities e.g. from coal to biomass to hydrogen
  • In support of this our expert training and masterclasses enable the up-skilling required for such transitions
